The efficacy of pneumatic trabeculoplasty in primary open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension

Abstract

Objective To study the efficacy of pneumatic trabeculoplasty (PNT) in paients with primary open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension. Design Prospective case series. Participants Thirty patients (30 eyes) with primary open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension in Beijing Tonren Eye Center enrolled from November, 2008 to February, 2009. Methods AU subjects underwent ophthalmologic slit lamp microscope, gonioscopy, Humphrey visual field examinations and intraocular pressure (IOP) measurement using applanation tonometer. One or two eyes of each one were treated with PNT Model 1000 (Ophthalmic International Inc.) at day 0 and 7. The ophthalmic slit lamp microscope examinations and IOP measurement were repeated at 1 day, 1 week, 2 weeks, 1 month and 2 months after PNT therapy. ANOVA of repeated measures was used. Main Outcome Measures Intraocular pressure. Results The IOP of pre-PNT was 23.2±5.3 mm Hg and the average number of eye drops for glaucoma was 1.47 (range 0-5). The IOP of 1 day, 1 week, 2 weeks, 1 month and 2 months after PNT therapy were 20.0±5.0 mm Hg, 19.8±3.8 mm Hg, 19.7±4.0 mm Hg, 19.3±3.9 mm Hg and 19.8±4.0 mm Hg. The depression of IOP at each time of follow-up was 3.2 mm Hg, 3.4 mm Hg, 3.5 mm Hg, 3.9 mm Hg and 3.4 mm Hg, and the depression of IOP has the statistic significant (P<0.001). The 1OP depression of 23 eyes (83%) was more than 15%. Conclusions This small sample study of PNT shows a potentially good IOP lowing effect on the primary open-angle glaucoma and hypertensive patients. (Ophthalmol CHN, 2010, 19: 33-36).
