Communication between tumour stroma and epithelial tumour tissue is a critical process in tumour initiation, development and metastasis in colorectal cancer. We are studying specific proteins that are enriched within the peritumoural stroma. These are being tested to determine which play the most important functional roles in colorectal carcinogenesis. Finally, the therapeutic potential of these novel gene targets are being used to treat preclinical models of colorectal cancer with view to extend the successful ones into the clinic.
