Rhys completed an Honours degree in Biotechnology at Flinders University of South Australia and has since worked in a diverse range of research areas. At the Centre for Hormone Research, Murdoch Childrens Research Institute in Melbourne he helped develop a novel gene inhibitory drug for psoriasis. He has conducted research into the biology of henipaviruses at the Australian Animal Health Laboratory (CSIRO) in Geelong as part of an international consortium investigating the factors responsible for the spillover of these viruses into humans and domestic animals. In the Department of Ophthalmology at Flinders University he studied the molecular genetics of complex ocular diseases including glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy and applied proteomics techniques to determine the molecular basis of retinopathy of prematurity, a blinding eye condition of premature infants.

His work within the Mind & Brain theme at SAHMRI is focussed on understanding the genetic underpinnings of major depression.
