Kathleen is both as a researcher and clinician, with a particular interest in preventive health behaviour and policy. Her research within SAHMRI’s Health Policy Centre has included areas such as patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) for prostate and breast cancers, through to sugary drinks consumer behaviour, and attitudes towards policy. Other interests include prevention of anxiety and depression in children, and adults with chronic health conditions such as diabetes.

Kathleen’s clinical work is as a psychologist (Clinical Registrar, MAPS) in private practice, working with clients of all ages, using both short-term intensive, and longer-term therapies. Prior to her career change to psychology, she worked as a Brand Manager within the Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) industry, in Australia and the United Kingdom.

Kathleen recently completed her PhD, which explored the application of Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy for Children (MBCT-C) as a preventive therapy for anxiety and depression in pre-adolescent children. This included a pilot test, and randomized controlled trial comparing MBCT-C to cognitive behavioural therapy. Results showed that MBCT-C and CBT had similar effectiveness for symptoms of anxiety, depression, attention, and wellbeing.
