Personal profile

Public Profile

Judith Gomersall is a research officer for the SAHMRI Women and Kids Theme and is an affiliate with the School of Public Health at the University of Adelaide.

Judith is a systematic reviewer and implementation scientist. Her particular research interest is collaborative evidence evaluation to inform the best possible health policy and care for young children, particularly those living in vulnerable communities.  Judith also has an interest in systematic review and guideline development methodology. Her ‘tools of trade’ are: systematic reviews, GRADE evidence quality assessment, evidence-based guidelines, and audit and feedback.

Between 2000 and 2009 Judith worked as a researcher in the children’s sector in South Africa.  In South Africa she worked with the Government, UNICEF and Save the Children on Government Budget Monitoring and Analysis for children, as well as on developing the child poverty profile to inform evidence-based child social policy.

Since moving from South Africa in 2009, Judith has worked on several systematic review and evidence implementation projects. She worked at the Joanna Briggs Institute from 2010 to 2013, leading the work of the Rehabilitation Evidence Synthesis and Implementation Node. From 2013 and 2016 she worked as a Research Fellow for the NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence in Aboriginal Knowledge Translation and Exchange (CREATE). In this position she co-ordinated and played a leading role in a set of systematic reviews to support the building of an evidence base for more efficient and appropriate primary health care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. She also worked with committee established to develop a supplementary critical appraisal tool for research conducted with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Australia.

Judith is currently involved with the Cochrane Collaboration, and works with reviewers conducting reviews for the Cochrane Pregnancy and Childbirth, and Oral Health Groups.

Selected recent projects:

  • A set of systematic reviews for the “Best fed” quality improvement project, a project focused on developing and implementing clinical practice guidelines (CPG) to improve breast milk use and the feeding management of pre-term infants in three South Australian hospital settings.
  • Two evidence reviews to inform updating of the 2009 Australian Alcohol Guidelines (2009) relating to pregnant and breastfeeding women (collaborative project involving NHMRC, SAHMRI (HMBC) and Cochrane Australia (Monash University)).
