Derek Chew is a clinical and interventional cardiologist as well as a clinical trialist and outcomes researcher in cardiovascular medicine. He has completed a Masters of Public Health at the Harvard School of Public Health, with formal training in epidemiology, trial design, biostatistics, clinical trials and cost-effectiveness analysis. His PhD thesis explored the factors for improving heart attack care in Australia. His current appointments are Professor of Cardiology Flinders University, and Regional Head of Cardiology for the Adelaide Health Service Southern Region. He is the Lifelong Health Theme Leader of the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI). He has national and international roles in chest pain/ACS evidence generation, assimilation and translation. He has served as the National Co-ordinator Multicentre Clinical Trials: CHAMPION PCI (Cangrelor in PCI), CRISP (IABP in STEMI), VISTA-16 (Varespladib in ACS), PRESERVATION-1: (VENREM-201 in STEMI). In clinical guideline development he has led the Heart Foundation/CSANZ ACS Guidelines writing group 2016 and served on the European Society of Cardiology Guidelines for the management of ACS Writing committee 2015. Evidence translation activities include: Troponin 1 Study (RCT assessing impact of hs-TnT ED care) and RAPID TnT study (0/1 Hour protocols for the assessment of chest pain in the ED), SNAPSHOT ACS (ANZ evaluation of ACS care); CONCORDANCE registry (Ongoing detailed assessment of care and outcome of ACS patients); PREDICT Study (International evaluation of clinical risk prediction and barriers to delivering ACS care), and the ACT-2 Study ( Invasive management in type 2 MI). At an Australian Government level, he chairs the Cardiovascular Disease Expert Advisory Group, the primary CV disease monitoring body of the AIHW; while providing expert advice to the Australian Commission for Quality and Safety in Health care). He also Chairs the Quality Standards Committee of the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand, and the Clinical Committee of the Heart Foundation. He has authored over 280 manuscripts and book chapters.
